Bare feet on a cold floor is no fun. A high pile rug takes care of that, and it softens the echo in a room full of hard surfaces at the same time. Which is why it usually ends up in the living room or the bedroom.
For a seating area, put the rug down so that at least the front legs of the sofa stand on it, otherwise the sofa ends up cut off from everything else. For colour there's cream, taupe and grey, or something bolder if the rug is meant to be the centrepiece.
