A knocked-over drink, muddy paws or a pet accident does not have to mean the end of your rug. According to the manufacturer, a washable rug can go in the washing machine, provided you use the right cycle and do not overfill the drum.

Can every rug go in the washing machine?

No. The pile material is only one part. The backing, adhesive, edges and any anti-slip layer must also withstand washing. Only put a rug in the machine if the label or product page expressly permits it.

Do not wash these materials or constructions without specific washing instructions:

• wool, viscose, jute and sisal;
• a rug with a glued backing;
• a design with delicate fringes or decorations;
• a rug whose label permits professional cleaning only;
• a rug that cannot move freely in the drum.

How to wash a rug in seven steps

1. Read the care label

Check the maximum temperature, cycle, permitted spin speed and drying instructions. For Loft Washable, use a gentle or delicate cycle at no more than 30 °C. A product label may specify additional restrictions for a particular design.

2. Check the washing machine's capacity

The machine's kilogram rating applies to dry laundry. Weigh the dry rug if you do not know its weight. It must fit loosely in the drum and be able to move. Forcing it in leads to poor washing results, strains bearings and seams and can unbalance the machine.

Use this breakdown as a practical check, not a guarantee:

Pile height and backing make a big difference. A thick rug takes up more drum space than a thin design with the same outer dimensions.

3. Remove loose dirt

Vacuum the top and underside with a suitable floor head. Shake out sand and crumbs outdoors. This means hard particles place less strain on the fibres and machine. Remove a separate anti-slip underlay; fixed backing stays attached to the rug.

4. Treat fresh stains

Blot liquid with a clean white cloth. Do not rub. Only use a mild product suitable for polyester and test it on an inconspicuous corner. An enzyme cleaner can help with urine, but check that it is suitable for the colour and backing.

5. Wash the rug separately

Arrange the rug loosely in the drum. Wash it without towels, clothing or other heavy fabrics. Use a small amount of mild liquid detergent. Too much is difficult to rinse out and can make the pile stiff or sticky.

Avoid:

• bleach or chlorine;
• fabric conditioner;
• aggressive stain remover;
• a hot cycle;
• a long, vigorous spin cycle.

6. Use a low spin speed

Choose a low spin speed if the label permits spinning. Stop the machine if the rug bangs hard against one side. Redistribute it or use a larger machine. Two people should lift a large wet rug, as its weight increases considerably.

7. Reshape it and leave it to dry

Remove the rug from the machine as soon as the cycle finishes. Gently straighten the corners and edges. Leave it to air-dry, preferably flat or evenly supported in a well-ventilated place.

Do not put it on a radiator or use a hairdryer. Only tumble-dry it if the label permits this. High heat can distort polyester fibres, edges and an anti-slip layer. Turn it during drying so the backing dries too.

Why no more than 30 °C?

A delicate cycle at 30 °C limits the strain on fibres, colours and backing. Hotter water can affect the shape and finish, even though polyester itself absorbs little moisture. The combination of temperature, movement and spinning determines how much strain is placed on the rug.

A higher temperature will not clean an overfilled drum more effectively. Removing loose dirt beforehand, blotting stains and leaving enough room for rinsing make a bigger difference.

How do you dry a washable rug?

Air needs to reach both sides of a wet rug. Lay it flat on a clean drying rack or distribute its weight across several wide rails. A heavy wet edge hanging over one thin washing line can stretch.

Follow this sequence:

1. Reshape the rug immediately after washing.
2. Blot excess water with clean towels if spinning is not permitted.
3. Let air flow over the top and underside.
4. Turn the rug once the top feels mostly dry.
5. Only put it back when the centre, edges and backing are completely dry.

If only the pile feels dry, the backing may still be damp. Putting it back too soon increases the risk of a musty smell and moisture between the rug and floor.

Washable high-pile rug

A high pile takes longer to dry. Once the rug is completely dry, gently shake it out and loosen the fibres with your fingers or a suitable soft brush. Do not brush wet pile hard; wet fibres and seams are more vulnerable.

Why is a washable rug suitable for families?

In a household with children, drinks end up on the floor and toys are moved over the rug. Being machine-washable gives you an additional cleaning option. Choose a size you can actually handle and wash. A compact washable rug can be more practical than an extra-large design that has to go to a launderette every time.

A low-pile design helps with daily maintenance. Crumbs do not become lodged as deeply, a robot vacuum can often cross it more easily and the rug dries more quickly than a thick, high pile.

Why is a washable rug suitable for pets?

Polyester absorbs little moisture and is easy to maintain. For hair, mud or an accident, you can clean the area first and wash the rug if necessary. For a dog or cat, preferably choose a rug that is:

• low-pile and densely woven;
• without long fringes or open loops;
• in a colour that does not contrast strongly with the fur;
• in a size that fits your machine;
• with anti-slip properties suitable for your floor.

With urine, odour is the biggest challenge. Blot immediately, treat it with a suitable enzyme cleaner according to its label and then wash only if the care label permits it. Do not use an ammonia-based product; the smell may draw pets back to the same area.

How often should you wash a washable rug?

Only wash it when a stain, smell or general soiling makes this necessary. For normal maintenance, vacuuming once or twice a week and treating stains immediately will usually be enough. Frequent washing places unnecessary strain on the fibres and backing.

Rotate the rug by 180 degrees every few months if sunlight and foot traffic always come from one side. This distributes fading and wear.

Can a 200 × 280 cm rug go in a normal washing machine?

Do not use fabric conditioner unless the label expressly permits it. It can leave a coating on the fibres and anti-slip finish.

Can a washable rug go in the tumble dryer?

What should I do if the rug ripples after washing?

Gently reshape it while damp and leave it to dry completely flat. Do not put it back while the backing is damp. If the ripples remain after it is completely dry, contact the seller before using heat or steam.
