A rug only works well when it connects the furniture. The most common mistake is therefore choosing a rug that is too small. It ends up looking like an isolated island between the sofa and armchairs, or leaves the back legs of dining chairs catching on the edge every time they move.

Do not measure only the free floor space. Use the complete furniture arrangement as your starting point and mark out your chosen size at home. The steps and tables below will help you avoid choosing a size that looks larger on screen than it does in your room.

How to measure a room in five steps

1. Measure walls, passageways and doors

Note the room dimensions, the space doors need to open and fixed walking routes. Also check whether a deep pile will fit beneath a low door.

2. Measure the furniture as one arrangement

Measure the seating area from the sofa to the armchair. For a dining area, include both the table and the chairs when pulled out. The furniture arrangement determines the size.

3. Decide which furniture will sit on the rug

Place at least the front legs of the sofa and armchairs on the rug. In a spacious living room, all the seating can sit on it.

4. Mark the outline on the floor

Mark out the outer dimensions with masking tape, newspaper or string. Pull the chairs back and walk along your normal routes before choosing the size.

5. Check the selected product variant

Sizes vary by collection. Check which variant is available in your chosen design.

What rug size suits the living room?

Let the rug extend 15 to 30 cm beyond either side of the sofa. Place the front legs of the sofa and chairs 15 to 25 cm onto the rug.

Small living room

With a compact two-seater sofa, 140 × 200 cm can work. If you also have an armchair, 160 × 230 cm is often better.

Medium-sized living room

For a three-seater sofa, start with 200 × 290 cm, with the long side parallel to the sofa. If in doubt, mark out 160 × 230 cm as well.

Corner sofa or large seating area

Choose 240 × 340 cm beneath the front of both sections of the sofa. A large corner sofa with several armchairs will often need 300 × 400 cm.

How large should a rug under the dining table be?

Add 60 to 70 cm to every side of the tabletop. This means adding 120 to 140 cm to both its length and width.

For example, a table measuring 120 × 80 cm needs at least:

• length: 120 + 60 + 60 = 240 cm;
• width: 80 + 60 + 60 = 200 cm.

A 200 × 280 or 200 × 290 cm rug will meet those requirements, with its long side running in the same direction as the table. If you want more space or have deep chairs, choose 240 × 340 cm.

For a final check, pull a chair back as though you were getting up. All its legs should still be on the rug. A low-pile design makes moving chairs and removing crumbs easier than a long-pile design. Browse the low-pile rugs.

What size should you put in the bedroom?

Aim to leave approximately 50 to 70 cm of soft surface on the sides where you get out of bed.

One large rug beneath the bed

Place the rug crosswise beneath the lower half of the bed. Choose 200 × 290 cm for a 140-160 cm bed and 240 × 340 cm for a 180 cm bed.

Two runners beside the bed

In a narrow room, two runners measuring 60 × 180 or 80 × 200 cm work well. Place bedside tables entirely on or beside the runner.

A rug at the foot of the bed

Choose 140 × 200 or 160 × 230 cm and let part of the rug sit beneath the foot of the bed.

Round rug: Ø 120, Ø 160 or Ø 200 cm?

A round shape softens straight lines and works well with a round coffee table, in a reading corner or in a child's room.

The same 60-70 cm rule applies to a round dining table. Add 120 to 140 cm to the diameter of the tabletop. A table of Ø 80 cm therefore needs a rug of Ø 200 to 220 cm. For a table of Ø 120 cm, you need at least Ø 240 cm. A round rug of Ø 200 cm is too small. Instead, choose a generous rectangular design, such as 240 × 340 cm, or look for a larger round size.

Six mistakes to spot before ordering

1. Choosing a rug that is too small. This is the number-one mistake: the furniture sits disconnected around it.
2. Measuring only the tabletop. Chairs need another 60 to 70 cm behind the tabletop.
3. Placing the sofa entirely beside the rug. Rest at least its front legs on the rug.
4. Using a product photo for scale. Camera angles distort proportions, so mark out the size at home.
5. Forgetting the orientation. The same size works differently crosswise and lengthwise.
6. Ignoring a door or walking route. Check the pile height and clear passage too.

If both sizes fit without blocking anything, the larger one is usually the better choice.
