Choose your rug size by your furniture, not by your room. With a three-seater sofa, start at 200 × 290 cm. Under a dining table, add 60 cm to each side of the tabletop. Along the walls, leave 20 to 40 cm of floor showing.

Use this table as a starting point, then mark the size out on the floor. We sell every size in the table, but not every design comes in every size.

How to measure in four steps

1. Measure the furniture group. For the seating area, measure from the outer edge of the sofa to the outer edge of the armchair. For the dining area, measure the tabletop.
2. Decide what stands on the rug. All the legs, just the front legs or just the coffee table. That decides the size more than the room does.
3. Keep the edges clear. Leave 20 cm of floor in a small room and 30 to 40 cm in a large one. A door needs to be able to swing open over the rug.
4. Tape out the size. Mark the outer edge on the floor with masking tape and leave it for a day. Pull a chair back and walk your usual routes.

What size rug for the living room?

The rug should be wider than the sofa: allow an extra 15 to 25 cm on each side. A three-seater sofa is usually 200 to 230 cm wide, so you need 230 to 280 cm of rug, with the long side along the sofa. That's why 200 × 290 cm fits most living rooms.

All legs on the rug

The sofa, armchairs and coffee table all stand fully on the rug. This looks the calmest but needs a spacious room. With a three-seater sofa and two armchairs, you end up at 240 × 340 cm or 300 × 400 cm.

Front legs on the rug

The front legs stand 15 to 25 cm onto the rug and the back legs on the floor. This works in almost any living room. Choose 160 × 230 cm for a two-seater sofa and 200 × 290 cm for a three-seater.

Floating in front of the sofa

Only the coffee table stands on the rug. That works in a small room or studio, as long as the rug is at least as wide as the sofa. Any narrower and it looks like a bath mat in front of the sofa.

Corner sofa

Place the rug so that both parts of the sofa have their front legs on it. For an average corner sofa, that means 240 × 340 cm. For a large corner sofa with an armchair, it's 300 × 400 cm.

Rug under the dining table: which size?

Add 60 to 70 cm to each side of the tabletop. A chair moves back about 50 cm when someone stands up. With a 60 cm margin, all four chair legs stay on the rug and nothing catches on the edge.

Under a dining table, choose a low-pile or flat-woven rug. Chairs slide over it easily and crumbs vacuum out quickly. Our low-pile rugs include designs with a pile of 0 to 8 mm, such as Kenzy and Stilo. If there's a lot of spilling, have a look at our washable rugs.

What size rug for the bedroom?

You want at least 50 cm of soft surface beside the bed to step out onto.

One large rug under the bed

Lay the rug crosswise, with the long side running from left to right, under the lower two thirds of the bed. With a bed 160 cm wide, 200 × 290 cm gives you 65 cm on each side. With a bed 180 cm wide, 240 × 340 cm gives you 80 cm on each side.

Two runners beside the bed

In a narrow bedroom, put a 60 × 180 or 80 × 150 cm runner on each side. That costs less than one large rug and you don't have to move the bed.

Rug at the foot of the bed

Choose 120 × 170 or 160 × 230 cm and let the rug run a little way under the foot of the bed.

Round, square or oval

We sell round rugs in diameters of 80, 120, 133, 160 and 200 cm. We have nothing round larger than 200 cm. If you have a round table of 100 or 120 cm, choose a 240 × 240 cm square rug or a 240 × 340 cm rectangle.

Hallway, entrance and kitchen

In a hallway, leave 10 to 15 cm of floor along both walls. A hallway 100 cm wide takes an 80 cm runner. Most of our runners are 80 cm wide and 200, 250 or 300 cm long. Five mistakes when choosing a size

1. A rug that's too small. The furniture stands loosely around it and the room looks smaller.
2. Measuring only the tabletop. Chairs need an extra 60 cm.
3. A rug narrower than the sofa. Go for at least the width of the sofa plus 15 cm on each side.
4. Going by a product photo. A photo tells you nothing about scale. Tape out the size.
5. Forgetting the door. A shaggy rug 3 to 5 cm high won't fit under every interior door.
